Update (24.08.17) POC position on Swedish athlete, Jenny Rissveds, not attending the World Championships in Cairns, Australia

Update (24.08.17) Adding to POCs statement made on 15.08.17 (see below), POC CEO, Jonas Sjögren, said - “We want nothing more than to see our national athletes compete in the best competitions, be it with or without our kit. We have stated that we would consider all possibilities and avenues to ensure that Jenny Rissved's and other athletes are free to compete at the Championships and we are pleased that the Swedish Federation acted on our request to find a solution, and developed a clear proposal for the teams involved and to allow the athletes to compete. We have no role in individual athlete selection or competition, which is wholly the domain and responsibility of the national federation, the athlete and teams involved. However, it is positive that Ida Jansson (Specialized) will now be able to compete in Cairns as her team accepted the federation’s proposal. Unfortunately, Jenny Rissved’s team (Scott/SRAM) could not accept the proposal which means the World Championships will take place without the reigning Olympic champion. The polarised debate between teams and the federation has been fuelled by a significant amount of speculation which has placed undue pressure on many people, not least the athletes involved. We sincerely hope that future discussion between all the parties involved will be able to show more flexibility, common ground and respect. We pride ourselves in being able to support Swedish cycling and we will continue to be flexible and pragmatic, as we have already shown with the Olympics in 2016 and around this current question, to ensure that all our national athletes are able to compete at the very highest level." Q and A from the SCF with details of the proposal for the teams http://scf.se/forbundet/qa/ (English and Swedish) Original statement from 15th August POC CEO, Jonas Sjögren, said “POC is a Swedish company and we pride ourselves on having a contract and working closely with the Swedish Federation and the cyclists they support across the country. Like all enthusiasts and supporters, we want our best national athletes to have the opportunity to compete on the world stage and we will do whatever we can to support them.” “Contracts are a complicated, but necessary, part of sport. However, if there is a willingness to discuss and find a solution to a particular problem, from all parties involved, then we are always willing to be as open and flexible to ensure that our national athletes get to compete at the highest level.” “We have shown our flexibility and willingness to find the best solution for all, most recently by agreeing that some athletes at the Olympics could chose to use their team sponsors equipment, instead of POC. Without hesitation we are willing to consider all possibilities and avenues to ensure that Jenny Rissveds and other athletes are free to compete at the Championships and welcome the chance to support our athletes.” Background POC is a Swedish company with a strong mission to do the best we can to possibly save lives and to reduce the consequences of accidents for gravity sports athletes and cyclists. As a Swedish company POC is a natural supporter of the national teams and has welcomed the opportunity to work closely with the Swedish Cycle Federation. In 2015 POC and the Swedish Cycle Federation agreed an official partnership which would support all Swedish cycling federation teams with POC helmets, eyewear, body armor and apparel.
