Thrilling, intoxicating, unnerving demonstrations of two-wheeled speed and skill are the essence of any bike race, especially the Tour de France. For three weeks the grandest of Tours will enthrall and, day after day, place the riders at the limit of performance and suffering. The rest of us can only watch and wonder.
It’s the only place a professional cyclist wants to be in July. But the demands and limits of the Tour are not only felt by the riders, but on their equipment too. It is a searching examination of the limits of materials, safety and performance.
To finish the Tour is an accomplishment only a select few will be able to enjoy. The ride onto the Champs Élysées, a triumphant moment for those who have challenged the limits. Vive le Tour, and chapeau to any rider who finishes it.
