I was first put in a wind tunnel for aerodynamics testing in 2007. I had just turned 17 and was on the road to qualifying for my first Olympic Games. The late 2000s proved to be the start of a refined technological revolution in the sport of cycling, and I have been a witness to the advancement of aerodynamic technology throughout the entirety of this millennium. The POC Ventral has not only the fit and the feel of something that is fast, but the data to prove it. On top of pure aerodynamics, it provides much needed ventilation. Like an engine, your body creates a lot of heat in order to go fast, and most of that heat is pushed out of the top of your head. This helmet not only allows you to cut through the wind, it directly cools your engine through the vents so that you can push your body further.
One of the most important parts of being a pro-bike racer is concentration and focus on the discipline. I'm constantly thinking of, and focused on, how I can improve as a bike racer, how I can gain an edge on my rivals, and how I can ride my fastest. At this level, the margin between victory and defeat, and the difference in ability between the best and worst rider, is minuscule, which means I can't afford to compromise. It's important for me to keep a cool head in order to achieve my optimal performance and to make the best decisions for myself and my team. This sport has taught me how to navigate even the toughest weather conditions, but the heat, especially at the most crucial points in my season, is often one of the greatest obstacles. It is on those days--the hot ones--where the POC Ventral helmet, and its increased ventilation system, I appreciate the most.
It wasn't that long ago that we weren’t required to wear helmets during a race. Today it's inconceivable to even consider not having a helmet. I had a very scary crash at Paris-Roubaix a couple years ago that made it abundantly clear that we cannot understate the importance of looking after our heads and our brains. Since helmets have become compulsory, they've evolved from bulky pieces of forced regulation to pieces of engineered beauty that can make us not only faster but safer. My helmet is the first thing that goes with me on every ride.
Designed with leading experts in POC’s own aerodynamic forum, WATTS lab, and with extensive computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulation and testing, the Ventral sets a new benchmark for aerodynamic performance, safety and ventilation.
CFD simulation and testing is our preferred method for aerodynamic design as it delivers enhanced levels of consistency and comparability, which gives us to ability to use our expertise, test ideas and fine tune specific details, such as the precise airflow channel widths and angles to maintain the optimal laminar air flow and reduce turbulence.
